Description

Vitis is a genus of 79 accepted species of vining plants predominantly from the Northern hemisphere. It is economically important as the source of grapes, both for direct consumption of the fruit and for fermentation to produce various wines. As an ornamental for the garden, grape vines are very effective growing on a pergola as you can harvest the fruit as it hangs into the head-space underneath for easy picking. Grapes are also effective and one of the fastest growing plants for covering a fence. The vine attaches to supports by tendrils. Training will be needed for wooden fences but not chain-link fences. After establishment, it is high maintenance if it has already filled the space and you don't want it to spread any further so plan accordingly. Various pests also attach grapes but are all controllable and you will most likely still get grapes even with no treatments.
